This playlist tracks what’s happening from the heart of the country scene to its outer edges. Find fan favourites you already love next to breakout stars and emerging voices. Topping the list this week is Dierks Bentley with the clever and nostalgic “She Hates Me”, a single off his just-released new album Broken Branches. “She Hates Me” is heavily inspired by the 2001 Puddle of Mudd smash of the same name, playing off the original’s grungy opening riff and telling a similar story, though Bentley’s version notably skips the four-letter words of its predecessor. Bentley says the idea originated during a writing session when he and his co-writers started goofing off after finishing another song. “Someone started playing that chord progression,” he tells Apple Music. “Someone said, ‘She hates me.’ Next thing you know, we're working on this song. And it was done relatively quickly. It’s just one of those songs, like a ‘5-1-5-0’ or something, that just stuck around. And then it comes time to pick a single, it's like, ‘Well, this song's pretty fun.’” Check back here early and often for updates, and if you hear something you like, add it to your library.
